I got turned away, so I built the list I could not find

In 2016 I walked into a sento in Nagoya, paid at the counter, and started to undress. A staff member stopped me before I reached the changing room. She pointed at my back, shook her head, and handed me my money back. I have a full-back tattoo, and that was the end of the visit. I stood outside for a while, embarrassed and annoyed, and then I did the thing I always do when I am upset about something practical. I opened a spreadsheet.

My name is Emi Kato. I am Japanese-Australian, I grew up between Osaka and Melbourne, and I have loved bathing culture since I was a child. After Nagoya I started writing down every onsen I could confirm would let me in with visible ink. What I found was that the information did not exist in English. Japanese-language lists, community forums, scattered blog posts from 2009. Nothing current, nothing honest, nothing written by someone who had actually stood at the door and asked. So I kept adding rows. That spreadsheet is now this website.

Since then I have visited over 60 onsen across Japan, from famous resort towns to tiny neighbourhood baths that never appear in guidebooks. I go in person, I ask the staff directly about their tattoo policy, and I write down what actually happened rather than what a tourism board wishes were true. If you have tattoos and you want a straight answer, that is the whole point of this site. If your best route is a guided experience built for inked travellers, the Tattoo-Friendly Japanese Bathing Culture Tour at Funaoka Onsen is where I usually point first-timers who feel nervous about the whole thing.

Here is what I have learned after all those visits: the anxiety is worse than the reality, but only if you have good information going in. Being turned away in front of a room of strangers is a bad afternoon. Knowing before you leave the hotel that a bath welcomes you removes the entire problem. That is the gap I am trying to close.

Where to start

Most people arrive here planning a trip around a specific region, so the guide is organised the same way. Pick a destination and you get my notes on the standout baths, the ones to skip, and the tattoo situation for each.

Onsen, sento, ryokan: know the difference before you go

These three words get used interchangeably by travellers, and mixing them up leads to disappointment. They are not the same thing.

An onsen is a hot spring. By legal definition in Japan the water has to come from a geothermal source and contain a minimum level of natural minerals. That is what you are soaking in. The bath can be indoors, outdoors, part of a hotel, or a standalone facility, but the defining feature is the water itself.

A sento is a public bathhouse that uses heated tap water rather than natural spring water. Historically these existed because most homes did not have a private bath. Many are humble, local, and inexpensive, and some of the most beautiful old tiled interiors in Japan are sento rather than onsen. The Nagoya bath that turned me away was a sento.

A ryokan is a traditional inn, and this one is a place to stay rather than a type of water. A ryokan often has its own bath, and that bath may or may not be a genuine onsen. Booking a room is frequently the easiest path for tattooed travellers, because many ryokan offer private baths you can reserve, which sidesteps the whole shared-bathing question.

Who this is NOT for

I want to be honest about who will not get value here. This site is not for you if you want a ranked list of the most luxurious five-star spa resorts regardless of policy. I care about access first and thread count second, so my recommendations skew practical.

It is also not for you if you are looking for permission to break the rules. I do not recommend covering tattoos with tape to sneak into baths that have said no, and I do not publish workarounds for places that have clearly asked tattooed guests to stay out. I respect a venue's decision even when I disagree with it, and this guide only sends you to baths that will genuinely have you. Finally, if you want sponsored superlatives and affiliate hype reviews, you will be disappointed. When I link a tour I mark it clearly, and no venue pays for a placement or a rating on this site.

Guided experiences I actually recommend

Not everyone wants to navigate a bathhouse alone on their first try, especially with the added worry of a tattoo check. A guided tour removes the language barrier and the uncertainty. These are the ones I send people to. The links below are affiliate links, marked as sponsored, and they do not change what I write.
