What shapes a visit to Japan
Autumn (October-November) is peak season for foliage views from baths. That one fact shapes the rest of the plan: which days you bathe, whether you stay the night or go hi-gaeri, and whether Hakone or Kyoto becomes your base. Get the timing and the bath right, and the leaves take care of themselves.
I learned the Kyoto half of that lesson on a weekday morning in Arashiyama. I watched mist lift off the river while the water held me still. Through the fence around the outdoor bath I could see the bamboo forest catching the early light. A temple bell sounded somewhere in the distance and nobody else made a sound.
That bath changed where I tell people to look. According to the Japan Onsen official cultural tourism site, a good starting point for researching onsen regions, Kyoto's onsen are mostly in the Arashiyama and Kurama areas, not central Kyoto. If you stay downtown expecting a soak around the corner, you'll be disappointed. The baths worth crossing the city for are out on its edges.
Rotemburo means outdoor bath. In colour season that outdoor view is the whole point, and our rotenburo vs indoor comparison explains when an indoor soak still earns its place. Red maple leaves against onsen steam is the classic autumn scene, but Hakone and Kyoto are especially crowded in this season, so book your room well ahead.
Hakone Full-Day Private Tour: what the itinerary covers
If you want a guided day in Hakone, I'd show a first-timer this private tour. A guide takes you by public transport to the ropeway, Owakudani, Hakone Shrine, the Open-Air Museum and a Lake Ashi cruise, with a stop at a foot bath. It is a sightseeing day rather than an onsen stay, so book your bath or ryokan separately.
Kaiseki, the seasonal multi-course dinner served at a ryokan (a traditional inn), is where I push back on anyone trimming the budget. On an autumn evening at a ryokan near Gora, tiny dishes arrived at my table one by one over the course of the evening. I studied the delicate arrangement on the lacquer trays before touching anything. There were flavors I could not identify and loved anyway. Do not skip dinner to save money, because it is half the value.
According to the Japan National Tourism Organization, Hakone Tozan Railway connects Odawara to Gora in the Hakone hills. Private onsen (kashikiri-buro) at ryokan book in 50-minute slots and cost ¥2,000-5,000 extra on top of the room rate. Our Hakone seasons guide and ryokan guide cover the rest of the booking decisions.

Planning autumn foliage onsen in Japan
The autumn moments that stayed with me came from timing and movement: walking between public baths in a yukata town at night, and choosing a mountain bath outside Kyoto's centre. Neither depends on catching the reddest tree on the reddest day, so I plan around bath hours first and colour second.
In October 2023 I checked into a ryokan in Kinosaki Onsen, Hyogo, in the afternoon, changed into the provided yukata, and walked straight out into the street. Around me the entire town was in yukata, couples and families and groups of friends all shuffling between the seven public baths in wooden geta. The clicking of geta on pavement became the town's soundtrack for me. The fifth bath was empty by the time I reached it, and the seventh, Satono-yu, had a rotemburo with steam drifting up into the autumn night sky.
Kinosaki is built around hopping between its public baths, called sotoyu. My advice there is to skip the ryokan with a private bath, buy the day pass, and get through as many of the seven as your legs allow. Wrap the yukata left side over right, because right over left is for funerals.
Kurama Onsen Guided Tour: Cultural Bathing Experience & Meal: who this tour suits
If you're visiting Kyoto and want a real onsen without going to Hakone, the Kurama Onsen guided tour is the one I'd look at first. The record pairs a mountain temple with an onsen in one day, which takes you to the Kurama side of the city, where the baths are. Day-use onsen (hi-gaeri) allow bathing without overnight stay. That makes a Kurama bath an easy addition to a Kyoto trip, and our Kyoto guide covers what else is nearby.
If you have tattoos, call ahead or check the website before you go. Don't assume. The JNTO onsen etiquette page explains tattoo policies and bathing rules, and those policies change from one bath to the next.

What Surprised Me About Japan
What surprised me was how local each onsen town's habits are. Beppu cooks with its steam, Kinosaki dresses for its streets, and the further-afield day trips combine a bath with a railway ride or wildlife. Treat each town as its own system, and ask the people who live there how things work before you improvise.
That lesson came in Beppu's Kannawa district in March 2022, well outside foliage season. A local woman handed me a wire basket with two eggs and a sweet potato in it. She pointed at a steam vent in the pavement, hissing at boiling heat. I lowered the basket in, waited a few minutes, and pulled out perfectly cooked onsen tamago, though the sweet potato took far longer. She charged me a few coins and told me the vent has been used this way since the Edo period. Ask a local how long to cook things, since times vary by vent.
The remaining products in this guide are outside Hakone and Kyoto. For travellers in Kanazawa who want the Kurobe Gorge railway and a bath-town stop in one day, the Kurobe Gorge and Unazuki tour rides the gorge line through the deep valley and finishes in the onsen streets of Unazuki. If Kyoto or Hakone is your base, cross it off, because it's a Kanazawa day.
The Snow Monkey Park, Soba Lunch and Shibu Onsen Tour combines wild snow monkeys bathing in outdoor onsen with a traditional Shibu Onsen visit, and pickup is available. I would save it for winter, when snow plus an outdoor rotemburo is the classic onsen experience. Our onsen-by-season guide helps if you're deciding between an autumn trip and a winter one.

Planning the visit well
Weekdays are quieter than weekends at most onsen. Within the day, go to the rotemburo early in the morning or later in the afternoon, when the peak crowds ease. Before you commit to a mountain bath day, check weather and seasonal conditions with the Japan Meteorological Corporation.
Bring cash, because rural onsen may not take credit cards, and keep coins for the lockers at the entrance. Pack your own tenugui too. The small towel is for washing, not for modesty, and rental sets don't always include it. Wash at the stations before you get in, go in without swimwear, keep the towel out of the water, and keep your head above the surface.
Before you visit
I wish I'd known that the bath schedule matters more than the sightseeing list. Pick one onsen town per day, confirm closing days and tattoo rules before paying, and check whether the rotemburo is private or shared. Those checks prevent disappointments that no amount of autumn colour can fix.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I book my autumn onsen trip around the peak colour date?
No one can promise a peak colour date in advance. Keep your bath days flexible and check seasonal weather updates close to departure.
Is there an onsen I can walk to from central Kyoto?
Plan on a separate outing to Arashiyama or Kurama. The Kyoto baths worth the effort are on the city's edges.
Do I need a ryokan night to enjoy an autumn onsen?
No. A hi-gaeri bath lets you soak and leave the same day, which works well from a Kyoto base or on a tight Hakone schedule.
When should I reserve a private bath at a Hakone ryokan?
Reserve it at the same time as the room. Weekend private-bath slots in colour season can be gone by check-in.
What should I pack for an onsen day?
Bring your own tenugui, cash, and coins for the lockers. Also bring water to drink before and after bathing.
Will an onsen accept my tattoos?
It depends on the bath. Call ahead or email the ryokan before booking, and don't rely on an old guidebook.
