If you came to Kyushu only to soak, you can leave the Hells off your list. Nobody gets into that water, and a half-day there is a half-day you aren't bathing.

Planning volcanic hot spring culture in Beppu
The part of Beppu worth building a trip around happens on ordinary streets. Beppu's Kannawa district has steam vents in the middle of residential streets. Locals cook eggs and vegetables in the vent heat.
March 2023 is the Kannawa afternoon I still think about. Walking through Kannawa, I noticed steam rising from grates in the pavement every few dozen paces. A local man was lowering a metal basket of corn and eggs into one grate on a rope, and when he saw me watching he grinned and said "Jigoku-mushi, hell steamed." I bought onsen tamago from a nearby shop and sat on a low wall eating eggs cooked by the same thermal heat that powers the entire city. No restaurant, no queue, no charge: Beppu doing what Beppu does.
Onsen tamago (eggs slow-cooked in hot spring water) are a common snack. The jigoku-mushi vents work as free cooking stations, so you can bring eggs and vegetables from a supermarket and cook your own.
The sand bath was the other moment. It was a summer afternoon in Beppu, and I felt the hot volcanic sand press down on me shovel by shovel until only my face was free. Steam drifted up off the black grains beside my head. It was the oddest thing, being buried alive and oddly comfortable about it. It feels claustrophobic for the first minutes before it turns deeply relaxing.

What Surprised Me About Beppu
Beppu stays awake later than I expected from an onsen town. Beppu is known for late-night bathing culture compared to other onsen towns.
The second surprise came from sand bathing, first on a trip further south in Kyushu in February 2021. They buried me to the neck in hot volcanic sand and left only my face exposed to the cold February air. The weight of it surprised me, a steady heavy press across my whole body. I think of sand baths as a separate category of onsen experience. The heat gets into you differently, and the weight gives you a meditative pressure that water never does. If you have only one day in Beppu and have never tried a sand bath, I would still make room for it before a third soak in water.
Season plays a part too. The seasonal notes I use put Beppu as warmer year-round than the snowier onsen regions, and New Year is a peak travel window. Check current conditions with the Japan Meteorological Corporation (jmc.or.jp) before you pack.
Planning the visit well

Buy the Beppu Onsen Coupon at the tourist office, because single bath entries add up fast. Bring coins for the lockers at bath entrances, and carry cash, since some rural onsen don't accept cards. Go to the rotemburo early in the morning or from mid-afternoon onward to avoid the peak crowds. Weekday afternoons from Tuesday to Thursday are the quiet windows. February is my pick: the winter crowds have thinned, and the outdoor bath feels better in cold air.
If you have tattoos, call ahead or check the website instead of assuming you'll be let in. Private family baths (kashikiri buro) in Japan cost ¥2,000-5,000 for a 50-minute session and are the reliable fallback for tattooed visitors. On my first visit to a rural onsen near Beppu, the curtain colours were the problem. The curtain colors were hard to read in the dim light and I picked the wrong one. I felt a jolt of panic the moment I stepped through. The attendant redirected me patiently, as though she did this every day. Check the curtain colour before you step through, blue for men and red for women, and ask someone when you aren't sure.
Once you're in the right room, leave the swimwear behind, because bathing in Japan is always naked. Wash properly at the stations before you get in. Pull the shower head out of the bucket so you don't spray your neighbours. Keep the small tenugui towel on your head or outside the bath, never in the water, and bring your own, since rental sets don't always include it. Don't dunk your head under, and never take photos inside the bathing area.
Mind your body as well. Don't stay in too long at a time, drink water before and after, and get out and cool down straight away if you feel dizzy or sick. Leave the baths for another day if you've been drinking heavily, because alcohol raises the risk of fainting. Afterwards, use the rest area instead of rushing out.
